AUGUST SONG A DAY CHALLENGE

Since my debut album was released in 2014 I’ve been touring the UK and Europe with John Bramwell from I Am Kloot. Having not had the chance to sit and write for a while I set myself a challenge to write and post a song each day throughout August whilst touring the festival circuit with my family in our caravan ‘Aurora’.

I then spent September and October in the recording studio working hard to create album number two featuring eight of the songs I wrote in August and four new songs. I’m pleased to announce that my new album ‘Songs from Aurora’ has now been mastered at Abbey Road Studios and will be released with 27.27 Records in Spring 2019. Here’s a quick overview of all 31 songs that I wrote in August with a little help from my friends:

I completed the August song a day challenge!! Thanks for watching, they've had over 40,000 views on facebook & insta 😮😮😮 I need your help choosing what songs make the album! Let me know your favourites by commenting below xxx

What inspired the song a day? I read a book called Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert that talks about turning up ever day to create - I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys creating in any way - you can find it here. I also chatted to an artist friend of mine Debbie Wattis who drew a picture every day for a year to document a transition in her life. Looking through her journey fascinated me and inspired me to post a song a day. To my surprise the videos had over 50,000 views on socials and loads of my musician friends joined me on different days.

Why the challenge? This year I set out to write an album and before the summer it was only half written due to a case of writer's block. I’ve been telling myself that it's because I’ve had so little time between growing my company, touring Europe and doing family life. After reading a great book on creativity called Big Magic and talking to an artist friend of mine, I realised that no matter what the result, it’s important just to turn up every day and create until inspiration comes.

Below you can view all 31 days of August along with the lyrics and a blog entry I made each day. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did.

1 AUGUST 2018

I’m on the road in my caravan Aurora for the next two weeks playing the UK festivals with my wife Lily-Jo and our two kids Dylan and Nico. We left Focus Festival in Bournemouth today to head to Sidmouth in Devon for a few days before the next festival in Cornwall. It’s the start of a new month, I have instruments with me and a musical family...so here starts the challenge to write a song a day for the whole of August!

DAY 1

Song name: You’re Around
Instrument and key: Mandolin Bm
Creation time: 35 minutes

I've had a bit of writers block over the last few months and so I've been inspired to write one song a day throughout August. Sometimes you've just got to push through even when inspiration seems far away! Let's see how this goes! Let me know in the comments which ones are your favourites...

Lyrics:

Mend the broken pieces of my heart
We knew each other from the very start
I wasn’t looking but I found you
I wasn’t looking but I found you

We fell together more than once or twice
Force of nature intertwining life
I didn’t know it but I knew you
I couldn’t know it but I knew you

Hear it call, the voice inside your soul
That fills the empty hole
And lifts that heavy load

They don’t make them like you anymore
Forevermore favour will knock at your door
I hear the sound of that old grey cloud crashing down
Whenever you’re around

Sold your old belongings to the crowd
Traded them for ones that made you proud
And now success is searching for you
Success is searching for you

I hear the hungry beating of your heart
You stitched it up and gave it a jump start
And now it’s leading you to something
And now it’s leading you to something

Hear the crowd that old familiar sound
Ringing through the town
And now nothing's gonna bring you down

Chorus

Weather report:
Sunny and hot with bits of cloud.

Doing today?
Packing up caravan, helping festival neighbours jump start car, driving from Bournemouth to Devon, all four of us went to play golf, throwing stones with kids on the beach, fish and chips in Sidmouth.

Feeling today?
Positive.

Who/what inspired you?
Talking with Debbie Wattis about her book release where she drew a picture every day for a year.

Song about:
Lily-Jo - I have crazy ideas all the time and some don’t happen but on this songwriting one she pushed me to do it and sat humming a first melody with me so I wrote it for her. She has traded bad decisions for good decisions since the day I met her and now is living her dream because of it.

2 AUGUST 2018

DAY 2

Song name: Partner in Crime
Instrument and key: Guitar C#m
Creation time: 3 hours

Day 2 - song inspired by my daughter Nico! www.davefidler.com

Lyrics:

I’ll sing you lullabies, I’ll be your alibi
Oh baby don’t you cry
As strong as you are, the road stretches so far
But I’ll be your partner in crime

When I feel I’ve fallen from grace
I take one look at your sleeping face
How could I ever be a failure
When that’s the best sight that I’ll see all year

You got so much spirit that it hurts my heart
Cheeky attitude but yet so smart
You’re at your best when you’re helping
Got so much drive in you for working

Chorus

You may be small but your voice is big
So observant and empathetic
You swim in shallow water but your soul runs deep
And I love you all the way from your head to your feet

You busy yourself without a care
And when you feel pain your soul is bared
You got a flare for the dramatic
With your hungry heart so energetic

Weather report:
Grey and cloudy morning but sunny afternoon.

Doing today?
Lazy day, kids made friends playing in campsite park and having water fights, writing songs, pizza in campsite cafe.

Feeling today?
Feeling a bit of pressure to write so it’s taking up a lot of the day - don’t want songs to sound forced but need to get faster at throwing them together.

Who/what inspired you?
Nico hummed a melody to me so I started with that and came up with chords, lyrics and verse melody.

Song about:
Nico and all of her eccentric ways.

3 AUGUST 2018

DAY 3

Song name: Shake it
Instrument and key: Guitar A
Creation time: 3 hours

Day 3 inspired by Nico (again)

Lyrics:

It’s a long way from here
But I can see it ahead
Though the end isn’t clear
Just let your heart lead your head

You got a drive for destruction
Weighing down on your heart
Trying to shake off the fear
Before your world falls apart

Can you help me and I’ll help you

You can make it, and then break it
And I’ll shake it right back to you
It’s not worth it, trying to force it
You can do it I’m gonna pull you through
Shake it right back to you

Walking out when it hurts you
Hiding away like a child
’Cause those memories are painful
And over time turned you wild

And there’s a battle inside you
That you can’t take anymore
I cut the weight from your ankles
You start to swim for the shore

Can you help me and I’ll help you

Chorus

You’re not alone
Not on your own this time

Weather report:
Sunny morning in Devon grey cloudy afternoon-eve in Cornwall

Doing today?
Travelling from Sidmouth to Cornwall for another festival.

Feeling today?
Amazed at the response on Facebook - nearly had 3000 views in 2 days and loads of comments and interaction. Wasn’t sure if people would be interested. Feeling less pressure than yesterday to write but I came up with most of today's song yesterday because I knew I’d be travelling today. I’m going to try to stick to writing on the day rather than in advance because I want to capture the feeling and the moment on that day. Kids are tired - loads of late nights living the tour life.

Who/what inspired you?
I sang the first thing that popped into my mind and worked around this theme - didn’t have a clue what I was writing about until near the end of the song I just went with a feeling which is how I write most of the time.

Song about:
Pulling someone through a hard time.

4 AUGUST 2018

DAY 4

Song name: Where is the sun
Instrument and key: Ukulele F
Creation time: 50 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-04.

Lyrics:

Where is the sun?
Where have you gone?
I have been waiting all summer for you to come

We were looking forward to a lovely day with you
But you hid your face away
Saw you way down the road, tried to get to you
But you disappeared without a trace

Where did it all go wrong?
Who took away your warmth?

You know life was much better when you were a go-getter
So believe me darling when I say I need you

Chorus

Where’s the sun gone? - Getting bullied out the way by another rainstorm
And I feel so cold without you in my life
Don’t leave it too long - it’ll be a better day when you turn the lights on
I can’t get you out of my mind

It’s been a long old lonely time
Without you by my side

And if I could ever help you feel any better
Believe me sunshine I’d never leave you

Chorus

Weather report:
Cloudy.

Doing today?
Mainly sound checks and gigs here at the festival, after show drinks with LJ & dancers.

Feeling today?
Been full on so I’m flagging. Only had this morning and late tonight to write the song.

Who/what inspired you?
Inspired by Lily-Jo singing about the weather.

Song about:
A cloudy day.

5 AUGUST 2018

DAY 5

Song name: Higher
Instrument and key: Guitar Mandolin G
Creation time: 20 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-05.

Lyrics:

I got all my friends here
Ain’t seen them since last year
It’s good to have them around
To lift my feet off the ground

When I’m low with nowhere left to go
When I’m down I need you around

Higher your love takes me
Higher your love takes me
Higher ten feet of the floor
Higher your love takes me
Higher your love takes me
Higher than I’ve ever been before

Who knew that’s all I needed
To help me get on through
Cause when I’m feeling jaded
I roll on back to you

When I’m left out in the cold
And my heart is full of fear
Your healing hands come fix me
I’m moving up from here

Pre-chorus and Chorus

Weather report:
Hot and sunny.

Doing today?
A morning gig, teaching the kids how to skate, saw Matt Hooper and his band play, watching fireworks.

Feeling today?
Free and easy

Who/what inspired you?
Meeting new people - Gareth and Marian Matthews. Their five year old boy was strumming my mandolin and I played the chords over the top.

Song about:
Friends helping you out.

6 AUGUST 2018

DAY 6

Song name: Sum of Days
Instrument and key: Guitar C
Creation time: 1 hour

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-06.

Lyrics:

Leave me walking leave me nothing
I’ll make something I can take it slow
World’s still spinning And I’m still learning
And my head ain’t turning In this space I’m in

I won’t wait I won’t hesitate to walk away
If this control is here to stay with you
It’s ok I’m up for sitting down with anyone
Moving on with anyone

I can’t stay in this holding
Can’t you see I don’t know what to do

Leave me be my heart's a mystery to anybody
Most the time it’s nothing to me my love
We’re the sum of days
And when we’re gone we’re never coming back to this place
Colours slowly fading away my love
This day is over never to be lived again

Leave me hanging My hearts still beating
And I’m still breathing I can take it slow
World’s still spinning And I’m still learning
Around and about you Is only open road

I won’t wait I won’t hesitate to walk away
If this control is here to stay with you
It’s ok You know I’ll batten down with anyone
You hang around to spread a little truth

I can’t stay in this holding
Can’t you see I don’t know what to do

Chorus

Weather report:
Cloudy morning sunny afternoon.

Doing today?
Met a friend Matt Hooper at main festival stage to write a song, skating with kids, Polzeath beach for bodyboarding, pizza and wine, met Jacqueline and Richard Waring from Liquid Sound. Extraordinary couple, Jaqueline got given a one way ticket to California by a stranger when she was 18 and went - got offered full residency but came back after being trapped in a house after an earthquake. Richard makes his own valve amps and is a miracle walking - should have died several times due to health issues. He’s still alive. Madness.

Feeling today?
Great day - did the song first thing and enjoyed a day off with the family.

Who/what inspired you?
I had the guitar piece and chorus already written as it’s an idea that I was working on for a while but couldn't get a verse/pre-chorus melody. Matt sat down with me and came up with good melodies for them. He said something great about just imagining you are having a conversation with someone talking around the song subject and then take the terminology used in a normal conversation and put it into the song and it becomes natural sounding. Think we got there with the order and melody - will continue to make lyric changes to this as it’s a good song with slightly rushed words which can push the song into a cheesy place sometimes.

Song about:
The desire to live as a free soul, not to be controlled or trapped. Not judge others and having belief in yourself.

7 AUGUST 2018

DAY 7

Song name: On the Line
Instrument and key: Guitar Abm
Creation time: 45 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-07.

Lyrics:

Down goes your body I’ll hold you steady this time
Never really ready for that which moves the course of your life
Then you wake up, to find your old life has gone
Across the water, your new one had begun
And you were on the run

Been having trouble sleeping when you’re gone gone gone
Who’d have thought it was you that would right my wrongs
I was on the line but I’m ok this time

Found all your old letters cut to the core of me
Thank God that I changed my ways back in 1983
‘Cause I remembered who’s protecting me
Now I’ve forgotten and shed the pain and grief in me
It’s got no hold on me

Chorus

Oohs
I was on the line but I’m ok this time

Weather report:
Rainy morning, cloud cover but warm.

Doing today?
Early surf at Perranporth, breakfast in cafe with LJ, skate park with kids, diazepam for back, spaced out afternoon writing this blog on caravan. Came round, started writing an uplifting song with LJ - put that on hold and started to work on a more minor key song. Went to see a friend of mine play and bumped into Meg from Wildwood Kin so arranged to do a song with them later. Tried out a new prototype amplifier called Waring Amplification, Richard Waring is on site with his company Liquid Sound - amazing sound out of the amp - breaking up just at the right point. I prefered the smaller 7 watt 1 channel amp.

Feeling today?
Feel great for getting up and out to surf but pretty beat up now.

Who/what inspired you?
Jacqueline who we met last night told us her story.

Song about:
Jacqueline's story.

8 AUGUST 2018

DAY 8

Song name: All I Can Hear
Instrument and key: Guitar Bb
Creation time: 2 hours

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-08.

Lyrics:

If mistakes were never made,
Chances never taken,
Nobody played the game

If minds were never changed
And hearts were never broken
And everything unspoken remained

The sky would still glow
And fires still burn
The world would still turn just the same
The winds is your soul
And it roars across the ocean
And all I can hear is you call my name

If love was never made
Opinions unspoken
You were never broken with with fear

Nobody lost control
Or changed their direction
And all their intentions were clear

Doing today?
Rehearsal with Soul box and LJ for filming session in hot air balloon, writing with a radio presenter, meeting potential franchisee for my business, writing more. Watched Wildwood Kin, watched Dylan drop in from a halfpipe on the skateboard after three days!

Feeling today?
Struggling for inspiration. Was happy with yesterday's song and now trying to stay on course with the writing but felt pressured today.

Weather report:
Cloudy with spots of sun.

Who/what inspired you?
Desperation for a song - tried to think of a different concept to usual lyrics.

Song about:
Destiny. God chasing you down.

9 AUGUST 2018

DAY 9

Song name: 70’s films
Instrument and key: Guitar Bm
Creation time: 45 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-09.

Lyrics:

Just like in the 70’s films you’re on top of it
Just like in the 70’s films you never wanted it
You took my foolish pride and made me cry
Just like in the 70’s films you never wanted it

I’m not sorry that I told you how I feel
I’m not sorry that you made other plans
I’m not sorry that it’s taking time to heal
’Cause when the going gets tough and you’re falling behind

Chorus

Saw you riding on your own in the field
I heard at first you didn’t know if it was real
But I’m not looking back now you know the deal
’Cause when the going gets tough and your losing your mind

DAY 10

Song name: Eternal Road
Instrument and key: Guitar C
Creation time: 2.5 hours

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-10.

Lyrics:

He said he’d always wanted
A blonde and blue eyed girl
When he left she was a young soul
And it shook the foundations of your world

But your hands were made for working and that’s
Just what you did
Head down raised such a strong woman from
A scared little kid

You couldn’t be more alright
So strong over all this time
A friend and shoulder when I want to hold you
And you’re still a dreamer
You’re such a rock for us
Still sold out for your cause
Over all this time You make it look so light
The way you hold Our heavy load

Some things are best left forgotten
And some things you’ve got to hold
He’ll be so proud of you mamma
When you meet down that eternal road

Our lost love

Weather report:
Rainy morning, sunny afternoon and evening.

Doing today?
Travelling from Shepton Mallet to Oxbridge in Warwickshire, staying in our friends cottage, night in local pub.

Feeling today?
Thinking about life.

Who/what inspired you?
We did a facebook live video asking for ideas for songs and my brother Andy suggested writing a song for mum. A friend Steve sent a rough song idea to me and I took the main three chords as the base and worked on my own melody and lyrics.

Song about:
Mum holding everything together after dad died. She has just passed on our youngest sister to get married - she was 11 at the time. We had a talk about her feeling like she’s completed her job and that it’s a definite end to this era of her life, which is both sad and happy. It’s about closure and looking to the next chapter.

11 AUGUST 2018

DAY 11

Song name: Muswell Hill Society
Instrument and key: Guitar A
Creation time:
10 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-11.

Lyrics:

He likes his beer too much to stay thin
Even in his soft drinks he’s sneaking gin
And in his coffee he likes a whisky
He’s the local northerner in your community
He goes to work to earn his pay
But he’s only happy when it’s a brew day

He was just a little boy from gee cross
Moved down to the big smoke and now pretends to be posh
Treads on grapes then it’s a waiting game
Red footprints everywhere drives his family insane
And by his side is the beauty he wed
When he’s feeling blue she cheers him up with red

Because he’s part of the muswell hill society
So bottoms up and have another drink with me

Weather report:
Sunny morning, cloudy from midday.

Doing today?
Becky who we are staying with is a photographer so we did an album photoshoot in her lake. Emerging from the water seems fitting for this journey of working my way through writer's block. There was something incredible about falling back into the water - being submerged in the water felt like a new start, like I’d unlocked something through doing this challenge. Becky and I talked about what water symbolises the night before and I felt like she really got the concept for the shoot. We headed off down to London for my uncle Rick’s birthday party. He runs Front Row for me in North London and is also a television and film director.

Feeling today?
Feel like I’ve broken the back of this challenge now and that makes me feel good. We’ve left the caravan at the cottage while we travel into London so everything feels lighter.

Who/what inspired you?
Rick’s birthday.

DAY 12

Song name: Falling upwards
Instrument and key: Guitar D
Creation time: 25 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-12.

Lyrics:

Falling upwards
Falling upwards

Troubles to left of me worries to the right
I’ll stick to the middle ground and roll towards the light
I’ll keep on moving till I’m nowhere sight
And I’ll keep burning your flame when they turn down the lights

Talk to the sea about me and ask, why, I’m, falling upwards into the sky

Choo choo

The wheels have started turning, running through my mind
Today I’m gonna board that train and leave it all behind
I’m leaving home, towards that open road
Putting all my troubles aside and I’m gonna keep on moving

Talk to the sea about and ask, why, I’m, falling upwards into the sky

Falling upwards
Falling upwards

Weather report:
Cloudy with bits of sun and rain.

Doing today?
Spent the morning with the Platts and went for a tapas lunch in Muswell Hill, then on to our friend Loretta’s for a bbq. Great to hang out with her, her sister Natasha and her husband Craig - they’re all musicians and great fun.

13 AUGUST 2018

DAY 13

Song name: Shaking chains
Instrument and key: Guitar C
Creation time: 1.5 hours

Lyrics:

Took this old heart of yours
Tried to power it up it didn’t take much charge
Didn’t take much charge
Blood is rushing through your veins
Want to feel that rush so hook me up to your mains
Together we’ll break your shaking chains

What do you do when everything you ever want
Comes true all at one time and then takes a nosedive
Real life has let you down stripped the jewel’s from your crown
Turned to your friends to find there was just one around

Chorus

Now you don’t have to try so hard to float
Now when storm hits it hardly rocks the boat
When they shout you down you don’t need to make a sound
You won the fight the minute you put your weapons down

Chorus

So happy that you changed your Name
The only way is up now Since we found you
Waited for you to be free
So happy you still hold the key
Whenever you come home we’ll be around you
We’ll be around you

Together we stand, divided we fall
When changes they come, won’t break down our Walls
No matter if the seasons change
Our love for you remains the same
See the fun inside your hearts
So pleased you have a brand new start

Life just hasn’t been the same

It was fun another place upon the compass
And we’ve come miles on these cheap seats
I don’t know where it is or when it’s coming
Another place for these dry bones

You, me, looking for the missing places
When I couldn’t be alone
Catch me before I fall to pieces
You’re my other word for home

Here it comes another borderline to greet us
And we’ve walked miles on these four feet
I’m falling apart a little bit around the breaches
Another place to call my own
We were over there

You, me, looking for the missing places
When I couldn’t be alone
Catch me before I fall to pieces
You’re my other word for home

Strung out low down out of my mind
Since I stopped listening to my own advice
Oh when will I start listening to myself?

Told everybody to take it slow
Then jumped head first out of that open window
Oh when will I start listening to myself?

Everybody been quoting the blues
Would somebody, anybody, clue me what to do

Everybody always tell me goodbye
Would somebody, hold my body ‘fore I break down and cry

People they saying I got so much to lose
They can’t see you in my head turning the screws
Oh when will I start listening to myself?

Tried so hard to shake you over all this time
Still got you going round in my mind
Oh when will I start listening to myself? Will I ever learn?

Song name: In Flux
Instrument and key: Guitar C
Creation time: All day

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-18.

Lyrics:

She got you running, for the hills you’re astray
Didn’t know that your love would fade away
And when it settles then what will become
Of the choices you made that you know can’t be undone

Oohs

You saw it coming but you lost yourself
Saw it coming, found something else
You were playing a game
It could be nothing but you chased it down
Could be nothing but you’re hanging around
Just to hear the sound
By your side whatever the cost
My friend you’re in flux, not lost

Let it heal before moving on
You don’t want to tempt the fate of a loaded gun
Then your fears can all be undone
You now can lay down yesterday for a better one

Oohs

You saw it coming but you lost yourself
Saw it coming, found something else
You were playing a game
It could be nothing but you chased it down
Could be nothing but you’re hanging around
Just to hear the sound
By your side whatever the cost
My friend you’re in flux, not lost

Weather report:
Grey.

Doing today?
Day in bed, pub tea.

Feeling today?
Tired, unmotivated, uninspired.

Who/what inspired you?
Had four song ideas about different things, one about Jo, one about existence - for this one I sung the first things that came to mind.

Song about:
Think it’s about a friend going through a change in life.

DAY 19

Song name: A Revelation
Instrument and key: Guitar & Piano E
Creation time: 30 minutes

Uploaded by Dave Fidler on 2018-08-19.

Lyrics:

Within your body is somebody new
The world is waiting to introduce her to you
If you’ve lost faith in the institution
A revelation is what the world needs
And a revelation we’ll soon meet

Will she be a game changer, a headstrong defender, a little world shaker
Where did she come from? She’s just like her mum
Will she be a risk taker, a peacemaker
Will she be heart strong with a mind that’s ironclad?
Just like her dad

Not anybody can help her eyes to see
It takes a family to plant a mustard seed
A new chapter and verse for you all
To raise a giant from something so small

Will she be a game changer, a headstrong defender, a little world shaker
Where did she come from? She’s just like her mum
Will she be a risk taker, a peacemaker
Will she be heart strong with a mind that’s ironclad?
Just like her dad
